Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner has had a storied career. He spent the ‘80s in indie films before finding mainstream success with The Hurt Locker and then in franchise films like the Avengers and Mission Impossible. Renner has certainly earned the right to wear a complicated watch like the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon.

Seen here in Times Square for the New York premiere of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation Renner is sporting the newest model of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon, styled in white gold. And while we’ve written about the Master Ultra Thin before, we’d like to take this opportunity to talk about what makes tourbillons so alluring.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon timepiece

Tourbillon is French for “whirlwind.” Basically it is a mechanism where the entire escapement rotates constantly on its own axis. Even the most basic tourbillon requires the touch of the most highly skilled watchmakers to assemble. The Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon’s manufacture-made automatic movement features 262 pieces and 28.800 vibrations per hour. On top of that, JLC has also found a way to house this caliber in a sleek, 11.3 mm thick case.

Because they are so tricky to make (and fun to look at), tourbillon watches show off their movements through the dial. Renner’s Master Ultra Thin has elegantly positioned it at the six o’clock where it does double duty as the seconds dial. In fact, the watch face is classic and clean with a silvered dial, dauphine hands and applied indices it is so much easier to read than most tourbillons. At the same time this simple design lets the movement take the spotlight.

There are even more surprises in the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon’s subtle performance, including JLC’s ultra-light grade 5 titanium carriage stem and an ultra-luxurious alligator strap. Which is why Renner and The Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon are such a good fit: They both worked hard to get where they are—an actor and a timepiece at the top of their respective class.
